According to early reports coming out of Germany, there is another little bit of irony added to their Champions League match against Barcelona on Tuesday.    Van Gaal mentioned that he was delighted to become the Bayern coach in an interview with NRC.

The AZ president and the fans want me to extend my stay at the club and become AZ’s Alex Ferguson. However, I still have the ambition to coach a big team or a national side and I will certainly leave AZ in 2010.

He also did mention that his next step was to move to a big club or even coach a national team. Although his current contract with AZ Alkmaar expires in 2010, there is a clause stating that he can leave if he obtains an offer from Italy, Germany, Argentina, Spain, or any of the Dutch national teams.

Currently AZ Alkmaar is in first place and has the possibility of winning their first title in 28 years with a win against Willem II.  They would also become the first team since Feyenoord (’98’-’99) to win the title outside of PSV and Ajax.

La Liga Week 30 Wrap

12 04 2009

Numbers seemed down this week in La Liga mostly due to the Easter holiday, but that did not reduce the excitement in the league.  Barcelona continue their ways en route to their 19th league title.  The Blaugrana Ballet showed offense, yet they were not as sharp when it came time to define the game.  Andrés Iniesta scored in the first minute in front of an open goal after Thierry Henry crossed the ball in the six-yard box.  Morris would double the lead for the Blaugranas when he would deflect an Iniesta pass into the back of the Recre net.  Lio Messi missed a penalty kick in the match.  Víctor Valdes also established a new scoreless streak which is nearing th 500-minuite mark.

Real Madrid in the meantime kept pace with a 2-0 win against Valladolid at the Bernabéu.  Although Madrid did not show much on the pitch, Raúl opened the scoring for the Merengue and Guti would set up the Arjen Robben for the clincher.   Once again, the champs were efficient and continued their unbeaten streak in the domestically.  Madrid have not lost a match in La Liga since November when they lost to Barca at the Nou Camp.

Málaga showed why they are the surprise team of the tournament as they have reached Europa League spots and are just three points out of the Champions League next season.  Duda and Eliseu buried a hapless Villarreal side  2-0 at El Madrigal who seemed more focused on their midweek Champions League clash in London against Arsenal.

José María Gutiérrez was always a players with a temperment. Now that same temperment has him on the outside looking in with Madrid coach Juande Ramos. This rivalry has become part of the subplots in the Madrid media as the team now sees the weeks pass by and their six-point deficit on Barcelona not budge.

Guti was observed by Spanish network Cuarto while he was on the bench during Madrid’s 1-0 over Málaga on Saturday. Guti goes out and starts to warm up in order to come in to the match. Then around the 85th minute, the trainer asks him to warm up and the Spanish international refuses.

Could this be the end of Guti as we know it at Real Madrid if Juande Ramos remains with the club? Let us know what you think.

Calderon Helps Heat Up Madrid Elections

26 03 2009

Who said that there was nothing in the political arena that was going to be more heated than the US presidential elections. Well it has finally been met. Real Madrid has a tendency to upstage any news in Spain in recent years, but this one seems to be the king of all “upstagers”. Read the rest of this entry »

“I can imagine that he is not going to be involved in football matters. I don’t know about construction and he doesn’t know about football. It is obvious.”

In an interview with Cuatro, Johan Cruyff came up with yet another witty line when it came to criticizing former Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez.

“(Real Madrid) are trying to reorganize from the top because that is what is missing. If it does not work at the top it will never work at the bottom,” said Cruyff.

The former Barca idol and coach is known for not holding back an opinion on any football topic and he was not shy about sounding off on Florentino’s ability to lead. “He does have enough football knowledge to make decisions. Others have to take them. That is why he needs other people to make the decisions for him. That is the case of the people around him knowing about the game, not him.”

Madrid Looking To Pick Up The Pieces After Anfield Disaster

11 03 2009

SOCCER-CHAMPIONS/

Pepe mentioned last week that ¨things would be different at Anfield¨. He couldn´t have been more right. No one expected Liverpool to come out so actively offensively and Madrid to be left impotent. Liverpool dominated the Champions League return leg from whistle to whistle and Real Madrid were a meek shell of what they looked like during their impressive run domestically.

Iker Casillas could not have shed enough tears while leaving the pitch at Anfield. Real Madrid’s win impressive run of form is all of a sudden a thing of the past and the future is looking more and more uncertain. On Wednesday, interim president Vicente Boluda stated that he is considering changing the elections to June, while many top brass members are looking at May. “It would be a model similar to how they do it in the US,” said Eugenio Martínez Bravo, the president of the Junta Blanca. “Obama was elected in November, but did not take over until January.”
